TL;DR
CRA does not publish a dependable ranked list of the errors most likely to trigger an audit. A high-fidelity review instead tests the return against the current form, the books, receipt records, governing documents, registered purposes, director records, disbursement-quota calculation, and supporting schedules. Correct a discovered error through CRA's current amendment process.
Reconcile donation and receipt records
Compare the general ledger, donation system, receipt log, bank deposits, and amounts reported on the T3010. Investigate differences rather than forcing them to match. Confirm that each official receipt contains the prescribed information and that advantages and non-cash gifts are documented.
Compare activities with registered purposes
Describe what the charity actually did during the period. Then compare those activities with the purposes and activities on CRA’s records. If the charity changed a purpose, use the applicable corporate process and current CRA update process; do not rewrite the T3010 description to hide a mismatch.
Separate disbursement categories
Do not collapse all charitable outflows into “gifts to qualified donees.” Separate the charity’s own activities, gifts to qualified donees, qualifying grants to grantee organizations, and intermediary arrangements. Retain the accountability and direction records applicable to each category.
Recalculate the disbursement quota
Use the correct fiscal-period rules and the prescribed average value of property not used directly in charitable activities or administration. For periods beginning on or after January 1, 2023, apply 3.5% to the first $1 million and 5% to the excess, subject to the current CRA rules.
Verify directors and legal information
Reconcile the director or trustee worksheet with the corporate register and changes filed with the relevant registry. Confirm the charity’s legal name, address, fiscal year-end, and RR program account.
Tie the return to the books and statements
Map each financial line to a working-paper total and preserve the mapping. Explain differences between the T3010 classifications and the financial-statement presentation rather than assuming they use identical categories.
Review related organizations and compensation reporting
Use the current form definitions and schedules. Do not infer that a relationship is reportable or not reportable from a name alone; document ownership, control, common governance, and transactions.
Correct errors with evidence
If an error is found after filing, follow CRA’s current adjustment process. Keep the original filing, revised return, working papers, approvals, correspondence, and submission confirmation. The Voluntary Disclosures Program has five eligibility conditions and should not be described as automatic relief for every late or amended charity return.
